Why are two guys who appear to have nothing in common doing this?
Seriously, don’t they have social lives? The answer to the latter is yes, we do and the answer to the first question is simple” because conversations like these don’t happen at Bates.
The last four years have seen hatred amongst Americans skyrocket, the culture wars rage out of control, and the ability of college students to have a fair exchange of ideas is at an all time low. I
It's not just college students, 62% of Americans say that the political climate today prevents them from saying things they believe because others might find them offensive.
These fears don’t respect party lines: Democrats (52%), Independents (59%), and Republicans (77%) all agree they have political opinions that they are afraid to share.
Way back in 2000, Republican candidate John McCain traveled around the entire country on the Straight Talk Express, sitting for hours in meetings with voters and reporters and refusing to leave until every single question was answered. Eight years later when he ran against
Barack Obama, despite being on his way to defeat in the general election, he publicly defended Obama after a supporter of his told Senator McCain that she couldn’t trust Obama “because he was an Arab.” Remember when people could still be friends with people they disagree with? It ain’t hard, Miles and I do it all the time.

I truly believe that through Forum Focus we can do something special.
Especially as during these times of injustice and pain, I want to be able to advocate for people to voice their opinions and express themselves.
At Bates, our community can do better to give students platforms to voice their opinions and stand up for what they believe in.
With Forum Focus, I hope to talk about issues that not only affect the student body but the entire world.
I think it's imperative that people should be able to speak their minds about issues such as racial injustice, gender inequality, and freedom of expression.
I hope that Forum Focus can serve as a platform to empower people to speak up and find their own voice.

Advocacy for one is advocacy for all. An important ideal people should carry and execute. People should understand the significance of fighting for change and how their voices can be heard. Forum focus allows people to be heard and seen. It allows a chance for others to voice their perspectives as well. In every conversation, there is a battle between two sides so shouldn’t all sides be present?
